Organisational Overview

Governed by a Board of Directors, IDV was formally established in 1954, and is a not for profit community service organisation dedicated to delivering high quality services to people with a disability.

IDV is one of the largest not-for-profit organisations in the North & West Metropolitan Region, delivering services predominantly throughout the municipalities of Banyule, Nillumbik, Darebin and Whittlesea.

IDV currently supports approximately 150 people with a disability to realise and achieve individual goals and aspirations, with a strong emphasis on community capacity building activities. We seek to embrace community partnerships that promote sustainable and meaningful opportunities for people with a disability to engage with their communities as they choose. IDV supports people with a disability to access opportunities to engage in life experiences that are meaningful for the individual.

Position Summary And Objective

Band 1 Instructors work under the guidance of Band 2 Instructors to provide a wide variety of quality services that meet the expectations and aspirations of IDV Participants.

Primary Responsibilities

Band 1 Instructors are responsible for assisting in the delivery of quality programs for IDV participants in accordance with the identified requirements of the PCP.

The Individual Lifestyle Arrangements program provides high quality community based supports to people of all ages with a disability.

The program aims to enrich people's quality of life through a Person Centred Active Support approach which promotes people's:

  • Participation in community activities.
  • Relationship building with other people.
  • Choice in all aspects of decision-making which affects them.
  • Dignity and respect in all aspects of their lives.

Skills that are developed and utilised in a way which achieves their identified goals.


Specific Responsibilities

Job Context

  • Liaise with participants, families and carers as required.
  • Exercise knowledge/skills to assist in the co-ordination and delivery of programs in a manner that ensures best practice processes are followed.
  • Provide support and assistance in the provision of personal care to all Participants as required.
  • Assist Participants to develop and monitor an individual plan that reflects their needs based on the fundamentals of Person Centred/Essential Lifestyle Planning.
  • Facilitate and encourage participation through the use of effective and augmented communication and interaction strategies.
  • Implement and monitor Behaviour Management Strategies as required.
  • Participate in Staff induction and orientation.
  • Undertake all rostered or other duties as directed in a manner ensuring satisfactory service delivery according to the Disability Services Standard and Organisational Policies and Procedures.

Actively participate in program planning, training sessions, team building and annual performance appraisals conducted by Management.

Advocacy

  • Inform and support Participants in promoting their rights and responsibilities
  • Advocate on Participants behalf as required
  • Uphold the rights, independence and dignity of all Participants, ensuring confidentiality and their choices are recognized at all times.

Administration

Complete documentation not limited to but, including:

  • Communication diaries
  • Medication sheets
  • Incident and hazard reporting

Key result areas

Key result areas (KRAs) will be identified in consultation with the Operations Manager as part of IDV's Performance Appraisal and Development process. These KRAs will be regularly reviewed and adapted as required.

Qualifications / Experience / Knowledge

  • Possess a fundamental understanding of the Victorian Disability Standards, the Disability Act 2006 and their underlying principles, incorporating them into daily work practices and values.
  • Fit to operate screen based equipment.
  • Current Victorian Driver's license.
  • Proven ability to work under broad direction.
  • Ability to use a range of computer software applications relevant to this role

Knowledge & experience:

  • A clear understanding of Goal and Objective setting in relation to identified Participant needs.
  • Experience in identifying, developing and evaluating communication matters.
  • Experience in dealing and communicating with people with an intellectual disability.

Skills:

  • Knowledge of general Policies, Practices and Procedures, particularly as they relate to communication.
  • Good problem solving skills.
  • Sound interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate with management, employees, and external Participants/customers.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the Disability Services Award Part 1 (IDV Enterprise agreement).
  • Understanding of the ATSS Policies & Mandatory Procedures Manual.
  • Knowledge of OHS Act, Equal opportunity Act,
  • Good understanding of the operations and service agreements of IDV.
  • Proficient in the use of a range of computer programs i.e.: Microsoft Word & Excel.

Level Of Direction Or Supervision

The Operations Manager provides broad functional supervision and direction, and in conjunction with the Assistant Manager participates in the setting of objectives and priorities for all Staff.

Instructors work under the direction of a Co-Ordinator who will act in close consultation with, and report directly to the Assistant Manager on a daily basis.

Positions Role

The primary role of this position is Program Service Delivery.

This position has, under the guidance and supervision of a qualified Band 2 Instructor, delegated responsibility for the supervision of a group of Participants in a program environment or in an individual service option.

The applicant will be required to become engaged in various off site community based activities.

Possession of a current driver's license is essential and the opportunity for further driver training may be provided.

There is a clear expectation to continue professional development and Instructors may be encouraged to participate in further accredited courses.

Instructors are a valued member of IDV's team and as such participation in community based service options, community education programs, and professional forums and staff development programs are encouraged.

The role of Instructor is dynamic and challenging and must be responsive to the changing requirements of the industry and the expectations of Participants, Families the Community and IDV.
